A Surprisingly Simple Way to Come To

Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
"I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”

Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Have you ever thought: "I want to go to ABC," or "I want to do XYZ, but I can't get started?"
Or maybe you've thought, "I don't actually know what I want."

Since we need a place to start, we might as well start where we are.

So it's good to notice if you're in your body--or not.
When we feel "spacey" or "in our head" then we're not connected fully to our bodies, and so we have less internal resource.

So how do we get grounded so we can take a next step?

If you've followed my blogs then you know getting grounded, and knowing your Base of Support is one of my favorite topics.

So try step one:
  • Sit at the edge of your chair. Feet on the floor. This is a good start.   Now you have a 4-point Base of Support: your sit-bones/thighs and your feet are holding all your weight. From here the rest of you has someplace to stack onto.  And just this can wake us up.
  • Put your hands on your thighs so that your thumbs rest at the crease where your leg bends to make a lap.
  • Keeping your shoulders firmly down, inhale and press your hands and feet down at the same time. This does 2 things. It lengthens and straightens your back and tips you forward slightly.
  • Stay in this position as you exhale and let go of all the "push."
  • If you notice that your lower belly is doing just a little work, then you're in a "grounded" alignment.
  • And because you've released your "push," you're both relaxed and ready to get going!
Good morning!!   You've just woken your body up and with it your brain!

Of course there are more ways to get grounded and I'll go into that in my next blogs. In the mean time, just coming back to this simple exercise will help.
Oh, and remember to stay hydrated.
Let's toast to waking up with some water.
"To Life!!"
